Description
One of the primary communications technologies today is fiber-optic telecommunications, the transmission of an optical signal by modulating a beam of laser light and sending it down an optical fiber. The modulated beam carries tens of gigabits of data per second and travels intercontinental distances down a hair-thin fiber of glass. This report presents technologies in two major subsystems required for optical transmission of the signal. First is optical amplifiers, which amplify the signal every 50 kilometers so the signal can travel long distances. Second are technologies applied to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Coherent modulation allows the multiplexing of several signals onto the same fiber, which multiplies the capacity of existing fiber. Illus.
