Natural Disasters and Insurance and Reinsurance: A Reprint from “Earthquakes and Volcanoes”
Gerhard Berz (au)
Natural disasters (ND) have increased dramatically in number and scope. From the 1960s to the 1980s, there was a five-fold increase in frequency of ND, an increase in total economic losses by a factor of 3.3, and a rise in total insured losses by a factor of 5.8. One reason for this rise is that more people are now affected, because of the continuing growth of the world population, the increase in building density caused by the growing concentration of people in urban areas, and because of a global migration of populations into coastal regions that are more exposed to ND. Also, the increase in meteorological phenomena, i.e., global warming. This article discusses the urgent need to address the insur. and reinsur. of disaster losses in a more appropriate way.
