Description

More than 40 historically active volcanic centers, each consisting of one or more volcanoes, are located on the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands. On average, at least one of these volcanoes erupts each year. Most of Alaska’s active volcanoes are situated along the Alaska Peninsula and in the Aleutian Islands, well beyond the Cook Inlet area and the city of Anchorage. This article briefly summarizes Alaska’s volcanic activity over a 12-month period beginning in Sept. 1991. During this period, significant eruptions occurred at 3 volcanoes: Westdahl, Akutan, and Mount Spurr. A secondary theme of this article concerns the threat to commercial air traffic posed by active volcanoes in the Alaskan region. Illustrations.
