The mission of the Office of Inspector Gen. (OIG) of the Dept. of Health & Human Services (HHS) is to protect the integrity of HHS programs, as well as the health & welfare of beneficiaries served by those programs. This statutory mission is carried out through a nationwide network of audits, investigations, & inspections conducted by OIG’s various operating components. The objective of this report is to asses for Medicare hospices certified by State agencies: (1) the timeliness & results of hospice certification surveys performed by State agencies; & (2) the extent of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services oversight of the Medicare hospice program.
