Description   by James N. Green, curator. The Library Company's exhibition "Mathew Carey, Publisher and Patriot" was conceived to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the founding by Carey of his publishing business in Philadelphia. Carey was the greatest publisher in America in the first two decades of the 19th century, but as the exhibition title indicates, he was also a central figure in the politics of his time. He seldom adhered to any party's line, but rather worked behind the scenes and through his publications to reconcile differences between parties or regional factions and to promote national unity and public welfare.
