Description
Mammography (MY), an X-ray procedure that can detect small breast tumors, is an important tool for detecting breast cancer at an early stage &, with appropriate treatment, can reduce breast cancer deaths. In 2002, the capacity to provide MY services was generally adequate, but that the number of MY facilities had decreased by 5% from 1998 to 2001 & that about 1/4 of counties had no machines. This report updates this information on facility closures & MY service capacity. The FDA regulates MY quality & maintains a database on MY facilities & other capacity elements. This report reviewed FDA data on facility closures & examined reasons for closures in recent years. It also analyzed changes in the nation’s capacity for & use of MY services. Charts & tables.
