Luigi Galvani: An Expanded Version of a Biography Prepared for the Forthcoming Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica
Bern Dibner (au)
Electricity as a potent force in transportation, communication & mechanical power is less than two centuries old & its genesis can be traced to studies carried on in northern Italy by Luigi Galvani & Alessandro Volta. Galvani first grasped the filaments that led to the phenomenon of electrical manifestation in animal tissue; Volta was stimulated by Galvani’s findings to extend the search. It led to the discovery of the voltaic pile, the chemical means of generating electricity & the source of constant current electrical energy. Luigi Galvani was born into a well-to-do family in Bologna on Sept. 9, 1737. This concise biography is enhanced by a supplement reproducing 3 of the 4 original drawings (in fold-out form) illustrating the 1791 edition of “De Viribus Electricitatis.”
