Lucky Luciano: The Man Who Organized Crime in America (rev. ed.)
Hickman Powell (au); Charles Grutzner (pf); Ed Becker (ad)
Revised edition of a book originally published in 1939. Lucky Luciano (1897-1962), known as the Father of Organized Crime, was born in Italy. Reared in poverty, he arrived with his family on N.Y.’s Lower East Side in the early 20th century. He spent his youth among Irish, Jewish, & Italian youths dedicated to crime, some of them going on to become world class thugs. He was sentenced to prison in 1936. When the U.S. entered World War II, Luciano made a deal with the U.S. Gov’t. that resulted in his being set free & returned to his native Sicily, where he worked for allied interests. After the war, he became involved in the casinos in Havana, Cuba, & spent most of his time in Italy where he ran criminal & drug operations from a distance.
