The growth of our knowledge of the North American land snail fauna in the past century is shown, so far as the number of species is concerned, in the table in this volume. The first comprehensive treatment was that of Dr. Amos Binney, 1851-2, which included beautiful illustrations and also Dr. Joseph Leidy’s pioneer anatomic observations. After that, William G. Binney and his collaborator Thomas Bland were the leading authorities up to nearly the end of the century; they published several volumes. The catalogue of species and subspecies in this volume contains only native species, those imported since settlement of the country by Europeans being omitted though they are included in the descriptive part.
