Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington was one of the greatest musicians in history. Everything Duke did, he did so well -- as a composer, bandleader, pianist, performer, conductor, arranger, producer, & businessman. Ellington influenced a generation of composer/bandleaders, incl. jazz artists Miles Davis, Sun Ra, & Mingus; as well as pop musicians James Brown, Sly Stone, Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, George Clinton, & Prince. Discusses an important link between Ellington & Indian composer/sitarist Ravi Shakar . Interviews include: composer Gunther Schuller; Jerry Valburn, collector of Ellington record.; Morris Hodara, a member of the Ellington Soc.; Butch Ballard, a former Ellingtonian drummer; & arranger Luther Henderson.
