Description
A few years after Columbus had sailed west in search of the Indies, John Cabot set out on a voyage of discovery. From reading reports of Columbus’s discoveries, Cabot understood what the other mariner did not: that Columbus had not, in fact, reached the Indies, but had instead discovered new lands. In 1497 Cabot left England in search of these lands. A month later, he landed on the coast of mainland North America, becoming the first European since the Vikings to set foot on the continent in 500 years. Cabot returned to the New World in 1498, but he never returned to England. However, the small island nation for which he sailed would use his discoveries to one day establish a great colonial empire in North America. Full-color illustrations.
