Description
Christopher Wilkinson (au). The biography of Jazz musician Don Albert, whose highly varied musical career largely unfolded outside of the mainstream of jazz history. The band he formed, known as “Don Albert’s Music America’s Greatest Swing Band,” toured the big cities of eastern U.S., as well as rural Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, & the Midwest. The details of these tours say much about the musical preferences of racially diverse audiences & of the economics of the band business during the period of its increasing regulation by the music industry. Albert gave up his band in 1940, took up permanent residence in San Antonio & operated two nightclubs from 1944 until the early 1960s. Albert confronted numerous challenges to his ambitions as a musical entertainer. Photos.
