Remittances (RE) are the personal funds that the foreign born send to their home countries. In recent years, estimated RE have grown dramatically, & policy makers have increased their attention to these flows. Organization use various methodologies to estimate remittance flows, which result in a range of estimates. In 2004, the Group of Eight (G8) leaders emphasized the need for improved statistical data on RE. In light of the growing volume of RE & the differences in estimates, this report examined: the methodology that the Bureau of Econ. Analysis uses to develop the official U.S. estimate; methodologies that other countries & multilateral organization use to estimate RE; & internat. efforts to improve the collection & reporting of remittance data.
