Information Security: Progress Reported, but Weaknesses at Federal Agencies Persist: Congressional Testimony
Gregory C. Wilshusen (au)
Information security (IS) is especially important for fed. agencies, where the publicís trust is essential and poor IS can have devastating consequences. Concerned by reports of significant weaknesses in fed. computer systems, Congress passed the Fed. Info. Security Mgmt. Act (FISMA) of 2002, which permanently authorized and strengthened IS program, evaluation, and annual reporting requirements for fed. agencies. This testimony concerns the current state of fed. IS and compliance with FISMA and summarizes: (1) the status of agency performance of IS control activities as reported by major agencies and their Inspectors Gen.; (2) the effectiveness of IS at fed. agencies; and (3) opportunities to improve fed. IS. Illustrations.
