Historic Beginning: The Ballistic Missile Defense System
Barry Leonard (ed)
In 1983 Pres. Ronald Reagan delivered a charge to the defense community to have a ballistic missile defense for our nation. With the initial capability of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), the U.S. has a capability to meet the limited, near-term ballistic missile threat. The initial capability provides a defense against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles using Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Standard Missile-3. This capability also enables engagement of intermediate-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles using Ground-Based Interceptors. This report discusses the BMDS’s mission, its integrated system dev’t., deployment, and element and component details of the BMDS. Illustrations.
