Description
When George Washington is surveying his troops on a cold day at Valley Forge in December 1778, he watches a soldier in a hut lighting candles and saying a prayer. The soldier tells General Washington that it is the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and he explains the story of how ancient Jews called the Maccabees fought for their religious freedom against King Antiochus. The soldier and the General discuss the similarities between the struggle by the Maccabees against the Greeks and the War for Independence against England. An appendix provides the historical facts on which this fictional account is based. Beautiful watercolor illustrations depict the cold night at Valley Forge and the golden glow of the Hanukkah candles and ancient Israel.
