In the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Library Company of Philadelphia is the richest accumulation of material - printed, manuscript, and graphic-capable of telling the story of the early settlers and of the manner in which their way of life spread. The emphasis of this exhibition is the history, culture, and people of Germantown, which is taken to mean the entire German Township granted by William Penn to Francis Daniel Pastorius in 1683. Today this area comprises the Philadelphia neighborhoods of Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill.
