Farm, The: Life in Colonial Pennsylvania
James E. Knight (au) (il)
The story of Thomas Ellison, a 25-year-old man from England, who describes his five years as an indentured servant with German farmers in Lancaster County, PA. “Because I had no money to pay for my passage to America, I had signed indenture papers in the captain’s cabin before we sailed from Liverpool.” Hans Mitteldorf chose young Tom, who was young and strong, to work on his farm. Tom describes life on the farm, including the many tasks that need to be done and the tools and implements the farmers use. He explains how the girls and women make woolen yarn and weave cloth, and how the farmers grow flax and make linen. Finally, Tom completes his five years of service and is able to leave to make his own new start in America. Illus.
