FEMA’s Flood Hazard Map Modernization Initiative
Wayne A. Morrissey (au)
The Fed. Emergency Mgmt. Agency (FEMA) develops & produces digital flood insurance rate maps popularly known as DFIRMS, which depict flood hazard risks throughout the U.S. This responsibility arose originally out of the Nat. Flood Insurance Program Act of 1968. This report provides background information on FEMA’s flood map modernization initiative & discusses recent related concerns, such as the recognition of flood hazard studies needed after Hurricane Katrina, the completion of timely regular updates of digital flood insurance rate maps, & the fate of the initiative under the Dept. of Homeland Security.
