North Korean Plutonium Stock: Mid-2006
David Albright (au); Paul Brannan (au)
Examines North Korea’s (NK) plutonium (PL) production activity & provides an assessment of its current stocks of separated PL. This type of PL is weapons usable & provides an indication of the size of NK’s nuclear arsenal. NK has been accumulating PL since 1986. It “froze” its PL production between 1994 & 2003. Since the freeze ended, NK has been both producing & separating PL. Through mid-2006, NK has produced an estimated 43 to 61 kilograms of PL, of which about 20 to 53 kilograms are in separated form & usable in nuclear weapons. NK is projected by mid-2008 to have 53 to 76 kilograms of PL, of which 40 to 68 kilograms could be usable in nuclear weapons. The separated PL would be sufficient to build between 8 & 17 nuclear weapons. Ill.
