Enhanced Protection for Children Affected by AIDS: A Companion Paper to “The Framework for the Protection, Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children Living in a World with HIV and AIDS”
Barry Leonard (ed)
All children have the right to protection. Parents are children’s first line of protection, & the risks of exploitation & abuse increase when parents or caregivers are absent due to illness, death or abandonment. Because such problems are highly likely to cluster in the lives of children affected by AIDS, they are particularly vulnerable to protection violations. Children affected by AIDS share many vulnerabilities with children who have disabilities, children who are discriminated against due to the color of their skin & children who have lost their parents as a result of armed conflict. This paper provides add’l. info. & outlines recommend. actions for protect affected children from increased vulnerability, & for reducing their increased risk of abuse, exploit. & neglect.
