Description
This report was requested & funded by the office of Dietary Supplements, Nat. Institutes of Health (NIH). Laboratory studies & human studies in the non-transplant setting have suggested a potential benefit of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on several outcome measures, some of which may benefit patients undergoing organ transplantation. A systematic review of the literature showed that all evaluated studies had a small size & methodological deficiencies. There was variability in the rigor with which endpoints were defined & measured. No consistent benefits of fish oil supplementation were observed for any outcome with the exception of a modest benefit on triglycerides in kidney transplantation. Illustrations.
