Nuclear Cleanup: Completion of Standards and Effectiveness of Land Use Planning Are Uncertain
Victor S. Rezendes (au)
During 50 years of nuclear weapons production, the U.S. has generated large volumes of radioactive wastes that have resulted in the contamination of soil, groundwater, & surface water. As a result, (in 1994) DoE faces a massive, complex, & costly cleanup effort. The U.S. will decide on methods to be used for environ. remediation at various sites. This report reviews progress in determining cleanup standards & land uses. It determines: how cleanup levels are currently determined for sites; the status & likelihood of success of efforts to develop cleanup standards for radionuclides; the status of land use planning efforts; & what hurdles would need to be overcome if land use planning were to be effectively implemented. Charts & tables.
