Description

Discusses the sequence of three great earthquakes that struck the Central U.S. during the winter of 1811-12 in the area of New Madrid, Missouri (NM). They are considered to be the greatest earthquakes in the coterminous U.S. because they were felt & caused damage at far greater distances than any other earthquakes in U.S. history. The large pop’n currently living within the damage area of these earthquakes means that widespread destruction & loss of life is likely if the sequence were repeated. Illus. Also includes “Trenching in the NM Seismic Zone,” by David Ross. In the NM seismic zone, scientists have been trenching across suspected faults to try to assess earthquake frequency in the Central U.S. These photos document these trenching studies.
