Description
With the end of the Cold War, the Dept. of Energy (DoE) is turning its attention to managing nuclear materials designated as excess to national security requirements & to cleaning up the contam’n. resulting from 50 years of nuclear weapons production. The U.S. has divided its plutonium inventory into two major categories -- that which is allocated for national security needs & that which is designated as excess. This report: (1) reviews how much plutonium the U.S. allocated for national security needs, how much it designated as excess, & how DoE determined these amounts; (2) reviews DoE’s estimates of the current & near-term costs for managing plutonium; & (3) review DoE’s estimates of the long-term costs for managing plutonium.
