Dogs Annie’s Box
The dogs in the art of Keith Haring are anthropomorphic: dancing, laughing, ogling, & showing off - -they were on occasion an alter-ego of sorts. Here paired with quotes from Haring’s journals, we can see in these drawings the joy & inspiration he found in his friends. These drawings provide a touching & funny counterpoint to his more monumental work. Born in 1958, by the time Haring came to N.Y. in 1978 to attend the School of Visual Arts, he had developed a style of simple outline drawing that derived from Disney cartoons & the sophisticated “primitivism” of such artists as Pierre Alechinsky & Jean Dubuffet. Swept into the downtown culture of punk & new wave music, he began to translate the street culture of N.Y. into his art. Small format. The box was Annie’s treasured writing case. Annie was Charles and Emma Darwin’s first daughter, and her death at the age of 10 broke their hearts. When Annie was a baby, Darwin doted on her, and thought about man’s animal origins. As Annie grew into a lively child, Darwin worked secretly on his theory of evolution, but his ideas were just one part of the family’s life. When Annie fell ill, Darwin was at her bedside, but could not save her. The acute pain of her loss cast deep shadows over his thinking about the natural world and the struggle for life. The author takes us into the family’s private world and draws on a wealth of previously unseen material to tell Annie’s story with rich and poignant detail. “Science and humanity come together in this vivid portrait.” Illus.

Manhattan Unfurled Babies
This magnificent set includes two publications in a slipcase: (1) Two breathtaking 22-foot-long drawings of Manhattan’s East and West Sides in a 24-panel accordion fold-out format. A visual key identifies important landmarks, bridges, and streets; (2) Manhattan Unfurled: Delicacy and Grandeur: An essay about the drawings by Paul Goldberger, The New Yorker Magazine's architecture critic, in a separate pamphlet. Keith Haring loved children & treasured the purity & innocence they embodied. The “radiant baby” was one of his signature images & appeared in many incarnations throughout his work: pregnant women dancing giddily, babies with halo & wings, cradled in their mother’s arms or playing with their dad. Matched with insightful entries from his writings, these joyful drawings continue to entertain, inspire, & provoke. Small format.
