On Dec. 13-14, 2005 managers of the various fed. response teams met in New Orleans to discuss their performance & capture recommend. that would improve future disaster oper. This report focuses on 6 areas: initial response, med. response, mortuary affairs, continuity of gov’t., evacuation, & coord. with local governments. They concluded that: a “strike team” concept should be standardized to ensure smooth liaison among gov’t. units; teams should be constituted, have leaders named, & be in place before hurricane landfall; team members should be selected for physical & mental ability to handle the on-the-ground conditions during the immediate response period; & FEMA should continue employing firefighters to augment the response teams.
