Description
The fed. gov’t. will spend approx. $170 million on “abstinence-only” educ. programs (AOEP) in FY 2005, more than twice the amount spent in FY 2001. As a result, AOEP, which promotes abstinence from sexual activity without teaching basic facts about contraception, now reaches millions of children and adolescents each year. This report evaluates the content of the most popular AOEP curricula used by grantees of the largest fed. abstinence initiative, SPRANS. The curricula used in SPRANS and other federally funded programs are not reviewed for accuracy by the fed. gov’t. The report finds that over 80% of the AOEP curricula, used by over 2/3 of SPRANS grantees in 2003, contain false, misleading, or distorted info. about reproductive health. Tables.
