Contains two articles: (1) The Undersea Medical Center: In 1991 this center was the sole mil. sub., diving, and hyperbaric medical research facility in Japan. It has conducted manned saturation diving experiments to a depth of 370 meters. The goal in 1991 was for divers to safely work at depths reaching 450 meters. (2) A Visit to the JMSDF Ship “Chiyoda”: The “Chiyoda” is a multipurpose sub. rescue and saturation-diving-capable ship. It served as the mother ship for the sole deep submergence rescue vessel (DSRV). In 1991 the authors were invited aboard the “Chiyoda to observe a DSRV-sub. rescue exercise. This article reports on that visit in view of interest in the area of rescue of personnel from disabled civilian scientific research submersibles.
