Center for the Book in The Library of Congress
Barry Leonard (ed)
Congress established the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress (LC) in 1977. Congress endorsed a program “to investigate the transmission and diffusion of human knowledge.” The Center for the Book serves as a catalyst in focusing national attention on the importance of books, reading, and the written word. It is an informal, voluntary organization funded primarily by contributions; nonpartisan, with no official connection to the publishing community and no official gov’t. policy role; project oriented but dependent on other org. to turn its ideas into programs; and wide-ranging and interdisciplinary in its interests, drawing on the resources of the LC and other org. for a varied program of activities for both general and scholarly audiences.
