Description
Catalogue of an Exhibition held March 4 to May 27, 1988, at The Library Company of Philadelphia. It explores the work of five American women poets who are rarely studied despite their talent, the amount of poetry they produced, & their depiction of American culture & history. With their surviving books & manuscripts in the Library Company’s collection, this exhibition begins to answer some significant questions concerning the influence on these women & their influence on each other & American literature in general. They include: Susanna Wright (1697-1784); Hannah Griffitts (1727-1817); Elizabeth Graeme Ferguson (1737-1801); Phillis Wheatley (ca. 1754-1784); & Anne Hampton Brewster (1819-1892).
