Birkhauser Architectural Guide: Japan: 20th Century
Francesca Montagnana (au)
Hardcover (no d.j.)
This guide to 20th-century architecture in Japan surveys around 600 works in some 400 entries. It charts an ideal itinerary from north to south, ending in the subtropical regions and thus revealing the deep differences between buildings in the densely populated metropolitan areas and the remoter islands in southern Japan. The descriptions of the works are grouped in sections corresponding to the seven major geographical regions of Japan. Each section is headed with the name of the region and then organized in prefectures, following the aforementioned itinerary. Each entry consists of a heading, description and relevant literature. Every building is accompanied by a photo and, in some cases, architectural drawings. Compact format.
