Description

(Philadelphia: Kennedy & Lucas' Lithography, July 1829) Founded in 1794 by the Revd. Richard Allen, Bishop of the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Rebuilt in 1805. Drawn on stone by W. L. Breton (Philadelphia)

Located on South 6th Street, this second home of an important African American church, it is identified by the simple stone table inscribed, “Bethel Church.” The scene is enlivened by the passing on many pedestrians and congregants entering the building.
