Description
Studies have documented declines in respiratory health after 9/11, among surviving first responders & other World Trade Center (WTC) rescue, recovery & clean-up workers. This report describes newly-diagnosed asthma among WTC site workers & volunteers, & characterize its assoc. with WTC site exposures. The rate of self-reported newly-diagnosed asthma was high in the study population & significantly associated with increased exposure to the WTC disaster site. There is a moderate protective effect of mask or respirator use. The findings underscore the need for adequate & timely dist. of appropriate protective equipment, & the enforce. of its use when their methods of controlling respiratory exposures are not feasible.
