Catalogue of an exhibit from the Collections of The Library Company of Philadelphia. & The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. This exhibition is both a celebration of, & a reflection on, what made American natural history American. It grew out of 3 years’ work for the Library Co., the Historical Soc., & also the Amer. Philosophical Soc. compiling union catalogues of their pre-1861 printed books in American natural history & in agriculture. This catalogue brings together for display books, manuscripts, paintings, music, photos, maps, money, & tradesmen’s ads. Includes brief essays on the new world scientists probed; the Philadelphia connection; wealth from the land; the American bison; nature in the cities; & exotica.
