Alphabet of Ships
Eleanor Dryden (ed); Pieter van der Merwe (in)
Hardcover (no d.j.)
Alphabet books, or ‘ABCs’ are well known aids for teaching letters and elementary reading, mainly to children but sometimes also to older people. ABCs exploit a wide variety of subjects and from the early 19th century most have been pictorial. In England, by the 1860’s the development of color printing saw them being produced as part of many series of ‘toy books’ designed expressly for children. This charming book is a facsimile of an “Alphabet” by Thomas Nelson and Sons, an Edinburgh-based publishing firm founded in 1798. It comes from a fine 1860s series called ‘Nelson Oil Colour Picture Books for the Nursery’. ‘Oil colour’ refers to the inks used: previously, prints could only be tinted by hand using watercolors. Includes a Glossary.
