Description

Diane Wagoner (au); Donald Rackin (au); Derick Dreher (ed) (fr)
On April 3, 1928, Rosenbach Museum cofounder Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach purchased at auction the original manuscript to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (known as “Alice’s Adventures under Ground”). This purchase stunned Britain & earned him the moniker “The Man Who Bought Alice” in America. The Rosenbach Museum & Library today preserves one of the world’s finest Lewis Carroll collections: over 500 letters in Charles Dodgson’s hand, nearly 3 dozen original drawings by Sir John Tenniel, rare & often inscribed copies of his books, photos, & much more. This catalog reflects, if not in every detail, a major exhibition mounted at the Rosenbach curated by an expert in Victorian art & a student of Carroll in particular. Illustrations.
